Action River: How to Get From Dream to Reality

A river divides two lands: Dream on one side, Reality on the other. To get from Dream to Reality you must cross Action River. That is to say, dreams and ideas begin in your mind, and will stay there as mere thoughts until you take action. Action is what brings dreams and ideas to life.
Have you ever had a dream project? A trip you wanted to take. A business you wanted to start. A weight loss goal. A book you wanted to write.
You could plan and scheme until the end of time about your grand new business idea that promises to revolutionize the world. But until you DO something about it, it’s trapped in your head. It will go nowhere. Action is how you FREE your dreams and ideas into existence.
So, back to the river metaphor, in order to cross from Dream to Reality, you’ll need to row the boat across the river. In other words, take Action. Without that active rowing, you’ll just float on the river, taking you wherever the currents around you happen to go.
Would you rather be in control of your life, or feel like life is controlling you at every corner? That is the difference between taking action and being passive.
If you are not taking positive action to get to where you want, then you are letting other things and other people control your life. You are floating on the river, content to let the water push you around and take you wherever, even if it’s over the falls to your doom.
You have a choice. You can choose to row the boat. You can take charge and be in control of your destination.
Rowing the boat is good, yes?
But rowing any which way isn’t enough.
To Succeed going from Dream to Reality we also need Specific Goal, Right Action, Adjust Course, Right Destination, and Persistence.
Specific Goal
Before you can row the boat meaningfully, you need to decide what direction to head in. You need a spot to aim for.
You could be an Olympic rower, going at a fierce pace. But if you row without choosing a direction to go in, then who knows where you’ll end up.
You’d go nowhere fast. You might go in circles.
And you’d wonder to yourself, I’m doing always busy doing all this work, why aren’t I getting anywhere?
Before the oars touch the water, know where you’re headed. Choose a specific goal. Write it down, and stick it somewhere where you’ll see it every day. So you don’t forget to keep your eye on the target.
Right Action
Jumping up and down in the boat is action, but it won’t get you across the river. Shouting, “Take me to the other side!” at the top of your lungs won’t help either. Neither will wishing or praying to be on the other side. Polishing the oars doesn’t get you any closer.
But rowing… Now that will actually help you get across!
You could be busy workaholic spending 18 hours a day in non-stop motion. You’re taking action… Great!
But is it the right action? Is each action properly selected and focused to move you closer to your goal with each step?
Often it’s not so easy to tell. But if you’re constantly busy but feeling like you can’t get where you want no matter how hard you try, then that’s a good sign you might need to stop for a breather and take a good, hard look at what you’re doing. Is your goal clear and specific? Are you taking the right actions?
Once you get the right actions going, amazing things start to happen.
Even if it’s just a little bit of action. As long as it brings you closer to your goal, you are making progress. Because a little action taken every day will soon add up to big things!
